In February of 2008 Heath and I had the priviledge to travel to Haiti on a work trip to help with the building of a church. We flew into Port-au-Prince and traveled for seven hours standing in the back of a box truck. The building site and tent that we would call home was on the side on a mountain, no running water or electric. We had no idea to what extent this trip would impact every aspect of our lives. The Haitian congregation welcomed us with open arms and Christian love. They made every effort to protect us, share with us, serve us, and love us. It was refreshing to see people with so little but still so happy and willing to share. We knew when we left not one of these sisters and brothers in Christ would ever be forgotten. Once again have been renewed with excitement to be united with all of Christ children in our Fathers heavenly home.
After arriving home and getting back to our materialistic and self centered lives. My aunt calls and says she has a friend that has a "situation" and would like to talk to me about Haiti...... She had been a host for a little boy from Haiti that came to the U.S. with Childrens Medical Missions for surgery. After caring for him for a year they had decided to adopt him. The bad news was that he had to return to Haiti until the paperwork was processed.
Skipping ahead to May I find myself on a plane with Jodi and two little boys transporting them back to Haiti to their orphanage, His Home For Children. We had planned to rent a guest house and help at the orphanage for the week. Once we arrived our plans changed, Jodi cut her trip short returning home the next day. I ended up at the orphanage bunking with two little girls Addi and Dakenzia. It turned out to be an eventful week. I was eager to help and was assigned to caring for three babies that were high risk and were kept in the apartment of Hal and Chris (the founders of the orphanage). With in 48 hrs two babies had died one of Pnuemonia and the other of an infection. We buried them together in a rented crypt. Then there was only 104 children in the orphanage. They all have a story .... Their parents died of aids, They were rescued from being used as a slave, Their parents were killed from violence or in Voodoo worship, They were found in the trash, They were abandon or abused, Their parents couldn't feed them. They all are living the effects of a corrupt Government in a country turned over to satan. The majority of the Haitian people are uneducated with no jobs and disease is everywhere. The goal for everyday is just to eat and stay alive. In 2004 the U.N. gained control and have made the streets safe for missionaries to return. This has brought them great hope!! Please pray for Haiti and its people!
